Stub Mixlib::ShellOut and shell_out in Ruby unit testing
Unit testing is part of software development to ensure the tiny component of a function can work as designed. Different frameworks and tools can be used to run unit testing for different programming languages. In Ruby, one popular unit testing framework is Rspec, or Chefspec if you are writing Chef recipes. While writing Chef recipes, some low level commands(DOS commands or shell commands) need to be executed on the managed resource to perform actions or gather information. For example, lis...

Interview Programming Problems Done Right
Introduction Why 37signals Doesn't Hire Programmers Based on Brainteasers and my comment on HN generated a lot of responses, so much so that I'm writing this post to properly explain the essence of a good (IMHO) interview programming problem. Pascal's Triangle Pascal's Triangle is a shortcut for getting coefficients most often used binomial probability. The root element is 1. Every other element is the sum of the one or two above it (diagonally left and diagonally right). There are severa...

Apple.com is down
UPDATE : The service is back now! Apple.com is now inaccessible. It shows below "Access denied" message on its official site. It is still unknown why the service is down. And there is no ETA on when the service will be back to normal. From the error message, some people think this happens because Apple uses Akamai's security product and the security policy in place is violated. It's basically a WAF. The big issue is it takes 45 minutes for changes to propagate through Akamai's network. So, you ...

Maybe we need //Comment comment
Do we need comment in our programs? Depends, if we can write a program which can clearly tell s the reader what the program does, then we had better to avoid unnecessary comments. However, if the program we develop is complex enough and it involves some uncommon logic which needs more explanation, then we have to add comment and make sure the comment we add can correctly tell the readers what we do. The worst scenarios is not you forget or you don't want to add comment, it's that you add comment...

To our youth
Youth is the best period in our life for most of us. We have dreams, passions and energies. We can work day and night for our dreams. We can hang out with friends the whole day. But there will always be a day when we are not young anymore, our youth will pass by. We will not be able to go back to our youth any more. Do you have anything to say about your youth? Recently, a Chinese IT engineer @本座 wrote a short code snippet to describe our youth. Here we share what she writes: public vo...

An alternative way to parse URL in JavaScript
Normally when we need to process URL in JavaScript, we may use the location object. Then we can use location.hostname,location.href,location.port etc to get the information we need. In this post, we will parse an URL with an alternative way. We can use an URL to create a DOM object by calling document.createElement("a"). The complete code is: function parseURL(url) { var a = document.createElement('a'); a.href = url; return { source: url, protocol: a.protocol.replace(':',''), host: a.ho...

Understand unsafe in GoLang
Before going to understand unsafe package in GoLang, the first thing needs to talk about is the pointer in GoLang. If you have a background of C language, you must know what pointer means and its usage. With pointer, you are free to operate any data at memory level which means you have great power, but this means that you have great responsibility as well. That's why it might be considered unsafe in lots of cases. Take a look at a simple example of doubling an integer. package main import "fmt"...
passing parameters to XMLHttpRequest’s onreadystatechange function
I’ve been smashing my head against this all day – but I finally got something working consistently and reliable, so I better damn well document it. This is as good a place as any, and hopefully it will be useful to others.I needed to make an Ajax call, so I turned to my good friend XMLHttpRequest. One wrinkle was that I needed to pass in a parameter to it… so I tried:var test = "bar"; req = new XMLHttpRequest(); req.open("GET", myURL, true); req.foo = test; req.onreadystatech...
